The mimosa’s flowering is a reminder that this lovely blossom is a symbol of International Women’s Day on March 8th celebrating the social, economic, cultural and political achievements of women. The day is also a time for action in accelerating women’s equality.

This equality is not only to be achieved in terms of women’s participation in the world’s affairs but also, as has recently been so sadly demonstrated in the murder of Sarah Everard (and the quite unacceptable behaviour of the police in reacting to the vigil in her memory at London’s Clapham Common) in the right of women to be able to walk home at any time of day free from sexual harassment, intimidation and abuse.
Italy, with one of the highest feminicide in Europe, is not a particularly wonderful place to be a woman although machoism attitudes have been tempered a little since female bottom-pinching and catcalling was considered de rigeur by most males.
Bagni di Lucca has been foremost in the celebration of international women’s day in the Lucchesia for many years now. Regrettably, this year, the exhibition of arts and crafts with the concerts and conferences at Ponte di Serraglio’s Casino’ have had to be cancelled because of the ongoing pandemic.
I feel privileged to have covered this marvellous local event in my blog since 2013. Unable to do the same for 2021 I can only present the following link index to those previous occasions.
I hope that you (and especially those who have participated in Bagni di Lucca’s ‘Settimana Della Donna’) will enjoy reading through these accounts with the earnest hope that next year this event will return with its characteristic flair.

Thank you for an inspiring but sad blog. May I suggest that the event could still take place albeit belatedly as all those wonderful ladies with ingenious ideas for these yearly events could arouse themselves out of the dreadful World Pandemic and all that that implies and via the zoom system of conferencing create a mini giornata della donna just choose a theme and with enthusiasm and verve rise to the challenge and task and get busy. That advice would be a great idea to jump into action get those computer savvy people to help and save the day so to speak! I look forward to any hint of responses the same with the Gallicano Carnival the Fornoli childrens carnival equally Viareggio because this invisible enemy will be defeated as with other viruses and then we will be ready to celebrate with great aplomb the dawning of a new post World Pandemic era full of fresh ideas of how to save our Planet ourselves and our beloved animals. We need too as many have stated to rededucate young minds not to resort to violence not to be misoginist and this applies to both male and female. I believe as everthing in life compromise is the key to a peaceful beautiful loving life. Let us depart from this terrible World Pandemic Covid19 negativity and horror and let love happiness beauty return into our lives not all this terrible negativity have pleasant thoughts be grateful kind smile reconnect with Nature soon it is Spring Solstice Day 21 st March 2021 let us be cheerful and rejoice pray meditate anthing to raise the world emotional feeling in order to return to some form of normality. Let JOY raise us out of doom and gloom and celebrate and be grateful let us look forward to enjoying happy days again!
Thankyou so much for your appreciative comment.
