We watched Roberto Benigni and his ‘Il Sogno’ (‘The Dream’) last night on RAI 1 where the (now 72 year old) actor and director of that marvellous film ‘La Vita e’ Bella’ (‘Life Is Beautiful’) describes the European Union as the “most significant political, social, and economic construction of the last 5,000 years”.
It was, as ever with Benigni, an enthusiastic and inspiring performance, particularly regarding his account of the Ventotene declaration of 1941.
It remains a fact that since the EU was founded no war has been fought between any member country for eighty years now for, as Roberto emphasized, there is a huge difference between being a patriot and being a nationalist.
‘Il Sogno’ should be required viewing for any remaining brexiteers.

È stata, come sempre con Benigni, una presentazione entusiasta e stimolante, in particolare per quanto riguarda il resoconto della dichiarazione di Ventotene del 1941.
Resta un fatto che da quando è stata fondata l’UE non è stata combattuta alcuna guerra tra nessun paese membro per ottanta anni ormai, perché, come ha sottolineato Roberto, c’è una grande differenza tra essere un patriota ed essere un nazionalista.
‘Il Sogno’ dovrebbe essere una visione obbligatoria per tutti i brexiteer rimasti.
