It was correct that ‘La Papessa’ (the Lady Pope) won the best float prize at last night’s fabulous finale to Viareggio’s carnival. But there were plenty of other fine fantasies including one that proclaimed that the title ‘elderly’ has now been abolished and another rabbity thing poking fun of today’s anxiety at being late for everything. We may have been a bit late for making shrove Tuesday pancakes but made up for it by enjoying the seaside town’s big occasion complete with fireworks and Sandra proclaiming herself an admirable sharp-shooter.

Era giusto che “La Papessa” vincesse il premio per il miglior carro al favoloso finale ieri sera del carnevale di Viareggio. Ma c’erano un sacco di altre belle fantasie, tra cui una che proclamava che il titolo “anziano” è stato abolito e un’altra cosa da conigli che prendeva in giro l’ansia odierna di essere in ritardo per tutto. Forse siamo stati un po’ in ritardo per preparare i pancakes inglesi del martedì grasso, ma ci siamo rifatti godendoci la grande occasione della città di mare con tanto di fuochi d’artificio e Sandra che si proclamava un’ammirevole tiratrice.
