Our second day in Berlin (and Sandra’s Birthday) started off in the Mauer Parc flea market and moved to Museum Island where we met Nefertiti in the New museum, romantic and impressionist paintings in the Art Gallery and ancient Greeks, Etruscans and Romans in the Old museum. The grand neo-classical buildings by Schinkel added to the impressiveness of the collections.

Our ticket gave us the option of adding two more museums but by this time we were dead-beat and decided instead to attend Lutheran Evensong in the German capital’s sumptuous cathedral. The service, dedicated to the Ukraine, had immaculately sung cantatas by, among others, Rosenmuller and Buxtehude. (I was reminded I’d motorbiked here from London in 2001).

Berlin is as much famed for its kebabs as its wursts and we concluded with one in the amazing architecture of the Hauptbahnhof before taking our tram seminarhaus-bound.

Il nostro secondo giorno a Berlino (e il compleanno di Sandra) è iniziato al mercato delle pulci di Mauer Parc e ci siamo spostati all’Isola dei Musei dove abbiamo incontrato Nefertiti nel Nuovo museo, dipinti romantici e impressionisti nella Galleria d’arte e antichi Greci, Etruschi e Romani nel Vecchio museo. I grandi edifici neoclassici di Schinkel hanno aggiunto all’imponenza delle collezioni.

Il nostro biglietto ci ha dato la possibilità di aggiungere altri due musei, ma a quel punto eravamo stanchi e abbiamo deciso invece di partecipare al Vespro luterano nella sontuosa cattedrale della capitale tedesca. Il servizio, dedicato all’Ucraina, aveva musica immacolate cantate da Rosenmuller e Buxtehude. (Mi sono ricordato che ero arrivato in motocicletta da Londra nel 2001).

Berlino è famosa tanto per i suoi kebab quanto per i suoi wurstel e ne abbiamo concluso uno nella straordinaria architettura dell’Hauptbahnhof prima di prendere il nostro tram diretto al seminarhaus.
