We had an appointment with the new German government in the morning: a visit to the Reichstag. What a superb Norman Foster refashioning of a war-torn building it is….and to see it in the morning of those elections! The views from the dome are expansive. Berlin is such a fine city!
The documentation explaining the Reichstag showed what sad political tsunamis the city has had to overcome over the past century.
The welcome handled by young people was warm and the presentation of this symbol of the travails of a great world capital was impressive. So different from that other place across the channel…
The afternoon was spent at the Zoo in the Tiergarten where we couldn’t resist the new-born Panda twins. There were plenty of other animals to be seen too including desert cats, bison, penguins and tigers. We also attended presentations of sea-lions and water horses i.e.hippos. We enjoyed a tasty schnitzel at the zoo cafe. Finally both African and Asian elephants were there to remember our visit!
Avevamo un appuntamento con il nuovo governo tedesco la mattina: una visita al Reichstag. Che superba ristrutturazione di Norman Foster di un edificio devastato dalla guerra… e vederlo la mattina di quelle elezioni! La vista della città dalla cupola è ampia. Berlino è una città così bella!
La documentazione che spiegava il Reichstag mostrava quali tristi tsunami politici la città ha dovuto superare nel secolo scorso.
L’accoglienza dei giovani è stata calorosa e la presentazione di questo simbolo delle difficoltà di una grande capitale mondiale è stata impressionante. Così diverso da quell’altro posto dall’altra parte della Manica…
Il pomeriggio è stato trascorso allo Zoo nel Tiergarten dove non abbiamo resistito ai gemelli Panda appena nati. C’erano molti altri animali da vedere, tra cui gatti del deserto, bisonti, pinguini e tigri. Abbiamo anche assistito alle presentazioni di leoni marini e cavalli d’acqua, ovvero ippopotami. Abbiamo gustato una gustosa cotoletta al bar dello zoo. Infine, a ricordare la nostra visita, c’erano sia gli elefanti africani che quelli asiatici!
