The Shelley Project recreates and celebrates what happened at Villa Diodati in Geneva in 1816, when Byron set a contest for his guests, Polidori, Shelley his wife Mary and her half-sister Claire Clairmont, to write a gothic tale. This led Mary Shelley to begin “Frankenstein”.
The Shelley Project pays homage to that event inviting writers to create their own fantasy stories in the places where Percy Bysshe and Mary Shelley lived during their stay in Tuscany.
Last night at the Villa Webb, whose guests included Byron Margherita Paolinelli introduced her italian translation of Mary Shelley’s short stories which had never appeared before in that language. It was an interesting event made atmospheric by the great hall of the villa now decorated for the festive season.
Il Progetto Shelley ricrea e celebra ciò che accadde a Villa Diodati a Ginevra nel 1816, quando Byron organizzò un concorso per i suoi ospiti, Polidori, Shelley, sua moglie Mary e la sorellastra Claire Clairmont, per scrivere un racconto gotico-fantasioso. Ciò spinse Mary Shelley a iniziare il famoso romanzo horror “Frankenstein”.
Il Progetto Shelley rende omaggio a quell’evento invitando gli scrittori a creare le proprie storie fantasy nei luoghi in cui Percy Bysshe e Mary Shelley vissero durante il loro soggiorno in Toscana.
Ieri sera a Villa Webb, che ospito’ Byron, Margherita Paolinelli ha presentato la sua traduzione italiana dei racconti di Mary Shelley, mai apparsi prima in quella lingua. È stato un evento interessante reso suggestivo dalla grande sala della villa ora decorata per la stagione delle feste.
Remembering our dear friend Pier Luigi Monti, Brigadier and Chief of the Carabinieri of Bagni di Lucca, whose funeral we attended yesterday at the church in Corsena.
Our thoughts and condolences for his family and for his wife Angela whose friendship was equally dear, particularly for Sandra.
The sad event was held on a beautifully sunny day with a guard of honour of the Carabinieri present.

Ricordando il nostro caro amico Pier Luigi Monti, Brigadiere e Capo dei Carabinieri di Bagni di Lucca, al cui funerale abbiamo partecipato ieri nella chiesa di Corsena.
I nostri pensieri e le nostre condoglianze alla sua famiglia e alla moglie Angela, la cui amicizia era altrettanto cara, in particolare a Sandra.
Il triste evento si è svolto in una splendida giornata di sole, alla presenza di una guardia d’onore dei Carabinieri.

Yesterday the streets and piazze of Bagni di Lucca were filled with Chrismassy events including street stalls, activities for both children and adults and a visit to Santa’s’ house.
In the evening a theatre show – concluded a memorable series organised by our tenor Claudio Sassetti commemorating the hundredth anniversary of the death of Puccini who loved staying at Bagni.
And so do we. Never a thought of a dull Sunday here!
Ieri le strade e le piazze di Bagni di Lucca erano piene di eventi natalizi, tra cui bancarelle, attività per bambini e adulti e una visita alla casa di Babbo Natale.
In serata uno spettacolo teatrale ha concluso una serie memorabile organizzata dal nostro tenore Claudio Sassetti per commemorare il centesimo anniversario della morte di Puccini che amava soggiornare a Bagni.
E così facciamo noi. Mai pensato a una domenica noiosa qui!
The Christmas jazz concert organized by the Fondazione Montaigne and its president Prof. Cherubini has become a tradition in Bagni di Lucca presenting music of the highest quality. Last night was no exception. The brilliant instrumental trio of piano, double bass and drums was led by a scintillating young singer, Giulia Galignani, whose voice reminded me somewhat of Astrud Gilberto.
The pot-pouri of Italian pop songs from the last century included my favourite ‘Ma l’amore no’, first sung by Alida Valli in 1942 and a national equivalent of ‘Lili Marlene’.
The concert wound up with Christmas carols and we were invited to panettone and prosecco by Prof Cherubini who was instrumental in getting the very special venue restored to new life. For it was great to see the former Victorian Anglican church, now housing the municipal public library, looking so well again!
A truly great start to the kernel of Christmas festivities which continue this Sunday at the Villa Webb with Santa Claus’ village. So hope you’ve all been good …otherwise no presents!

Il concerto jazz natalizio organizzato dalla Fondazione Montaigne e dal suo presidente Prof. Cherubini è diventato una tradizione a Bagni di Lucca, presentando musica di altissima qualità. La scorsa notte non ha fatto eccezione. Il brillante trio strumentale di pianoforte, contrabbasso e batteria è stato guidato da una giovane cantante scintillante, Giulia Galignani, la cui voce mi ha ricordato un po’ Astrud Gilberto.
Il pot-pouri di canzoni pop italiane del secolo scorso includeva la mia preferita “Ma l’amore no”, cantata per la prima volta da Alida Valli nel 1942 e un equivalente nazionale di “Lili Marlene”.
Il concerto si è concluso con canti natalizi e siamo stati invitati a panettone e prosecco dal Prof. Cherubini, che è stato determinante nel far sì che il luogo molto speciale tornasse a nuova vita. Perché è stato fantastico vedere l’ex chiesa anglicana vittoriana, ora sede della biblioteca pubblica comunale, apparire di nuovo così bene!
Un inizio davvero grandioso per il nucleo delle festività natalizie che continuano questa domenica a Villa Webb con il villaggio di Babbo Natale. Quindi spero che siate stati tutti buoni…altrimenti niente regali!
Autumn, that season of mists and mellow fruitfulness, that season the favourite of so many, is the theme of Marco Pistolozzi’s photographic exhibition opening today at Auser’s library at Ponte a Serraglio. Enhanced by Marco’s instinctive choice of the right moment to click the shutter and given new perspective by his expert use of the drone (I wish drones were just used for this purpose today) the exhibition remains open Tuesday, Wednesday and Saturday from 10 am to 12 pm until. Well worth a visit!
L’autunno, quella stagione di nebbie e di morbida fruttuosità, quella stagione preferita da molti, è il tema della mostra fotografica di Marco Pistolozzi che inaugura oggi alla biblioteca Auser di Ponte a Serraglio. Arricchita dalla scelta istintiva di Marco del momento giusto per scattare e dotata di una nuova prospettiva dal suo uso esperto del drone (vorrei che i droni venissero usati solo per questo scopo oggi), la mostra rimane aperta martedì, mercoledì e sabato dalle 10 alle 12 fino a. Vale la pena visitarla!
A ‘Mandolata’ is a perforated wall of overlapping paving bricks. The wall is built up by placing the bricks’ narrowest side on the base to form honeycomb structures allowing air circulation and the drying of hay and animal forage.
Our out-building has a mandolata and they’re a common feature in the rural landscape. Yesterday we took some photographs of them on our return home. I think you will agree a mandolata is not only useful but also quite ornamental.
Una ‘Mandolata’ è un muro perforato di mattoni da pavimentazione sovrapposti. Il muro è costruito posizionando il lato più stretto dei mattoni sulla base per formare strutture a nido d’ape che consentono la circolazione dell’aria e l’essiccazione del fieno e del foraggio per animali.
La nostra dependance ha una mandolata e sono una caratteristica comune nel paesaggio rurale. Ieri ne abbiamo scattato alcune fotografie al nostro ritorno a casa. Penso che concorderete sul fatto che le mandolate non sono solo utili ma anche piuttosto ornamentali.
There are so many olives still to be picked in our little grove…and such a lovely winter’s day to harvest them!
Ci sono ancora così tante olive da raccogliere nel nostro piccolo frutteto… e che bella giornata invernale per raccoglierle!
