We continue to find it so difficult to understand how a nation could sanction the vastest concentration camp since WW2, permitting the starvation and killing of innocent civilians when its own people have been subject to the greatest genocide attempt since Homo Sapiens Sapiens (so-called) wiped out the Neanderthaloids. Continuiamo a trovare così difficile comprendere come una nazione possa autorizzare il più vasto campo di concentramento dalla Seconda Guerra Mondiale, permettendo la fame e l’uccisione di civili innocenti, quando il suo stesso popolo è stato vittima del più grande tentativo di genocidio da quando l’Homo Sapiens Sapiens (cosiddetto) ha sterminato i Neanderthal. (Sì, abbiamo visitato alcuni di questi campi di sterminio, Sachsenhausen solo lo scorso febbraio).

Ethnobotanist Marco Pardini took us for a walk along the cool banks of the Lima canyon last weekend. A seemingly inexhaustible source of information about plant etymology, uses and medical properties Pardini also has a TV programme and several books to his credit, of which we have three.

L’etnobotanico Marco Pardini ci ha portato a fare una passeggiata lungo le fresche rive del canyon di Lima lo scorso fine settimana. Una fonte apparentemente inesauribile di informazioni sull’etimologia, gli usi e le proprietà medicinali delle piante. Pardini ha anche un programma televisivo e diversi libri al suo attivo, di cui ne abbiamo tre.

The façade of San Cassiano’s parish church with its fabulous Celtic stone ornamentations formed the backdrop to the concert given yesterday by the LAiKA quartet, four young Danish musicians (violinists Jakob Elmark and Jonas Willaume, violist Jens Bendix Nielsen, and cellist Amalie Askjær Staunæs) formed in 2022 at the Royal Danish Academy of Music.

The concert opened with Haydn’s Quartet in G minor, one of the six Op 20 quartets that revolutionized the genre. Both intense and poetic its slow movement contained an especially heart-warming part for the cello, beautifully played by Amalie.

The String Quartet No. 6 by Danish composer Rued Langgaard (1893–1952),  followed. In a dramatic, late-Romantic style full of sudden mood swing the quartet alternated between lyrical moments and bursts of energy.

The program continued with the second movement of Felix Mendelssohn’s Quartet in A minor No. 2 composed in 1827, when the musician was just 18 years old. The intense and expressive adagio revealed the young Mendelssohn’s precocious emotional maturity.

The concert concluded with “Regin Smiður,” a traditional Faroese song recounting the legendary feat of the mythological blacksmith Regin connecting past and present, folklore and classicism, with much energy.

The LAiKA quartet is in the Lucchesia as part of the Virtuoso and Belcanto festival and is also engaging in a quartet competition here. Their brilliant ensemble playing leaves no doubt in me that they could be the winners!

The new course in landscape drawing, under the tutelage of professional artists Morena Guarnaschelli and Deenagh Miller from our Borgo degli Artisti, was inaugurated this evening in the cool riverside garden of La Ninfa hotel, Ponte al Serraglio.

There are still places available for next week’s lesson at the same place and the same time, Tuesdays at 18.00. It’s free (although donations are welcome) so do join in even if you think you lack artistic flair. You may surprise yourself!

Il nuovo corso di disegno del paesaggio, tenuto dalle artiste professioniste Morena Guarnaschelli e Deenagh Miller del nostro Borgo degli artisti, è stato inaugurato questa sera nel fresco giardino dell’hotel La Ninfa a Ponte al Serraglio.

Ci sono ancora posti disponibili per la lezione della prossima settimana nello stesso luogo e alla stessa ora, martedì alle 18:00. L’ingresso è gratuito (anche se le donazioni sono ben accette), quindi partecipate anche se pensate di non avere un talento artistico. Potreste sorprendervi!

This morning the centenary of the San Cassiano war memorial was commemorated in the presence of representatives of the comune, a substantial public, the playing of the Corsagna band and the Benediction of the parish priest.

I consider San Cassiano’s war memorial to be the most moving of such monuments in the area. The fine bronze sculpture fully represents not just the glory of a hero but the pity of war which so sadly continues to afflict so many parts of our tortured Earth.

“They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old:
Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn.
At the going down of the sun and in the morning
We will remember them”.

Questa mattina si è celebrato il centenario del monumento ai caduti di San Cassiano alla presenza dei rappresentanti del comune, di un folto pubblico, dell’esibizione della banda Corsagna e della benedizione del parroco.

Considero il monumento ai caduti di San Cassiano il più toccante tra i monumenti di questo genere della zona. La pregevole scultura in bronzo rappresenta appieno non solo la gloria di un eroe, ma anche la futilità pietosa della guerra che ancora oggi affligge così tristemente tante parti della nostra martoriata Terra.

“Non invecchieranno come noi che siamo rimasti:

Wandering about the City of London: free organ concerts abound almost daily in its churches. We attended one on our recent visit at St Michael Cornhill. Resident organist Jonathan Bennett played: such a powerfully moving sound!
