Yesterday, protests against the horrors in Gaza spread across Italy, throwing public transport into chaos. Our dear friend and former colleague from Australia landed at Pisa in the afternoon and, despite the disruption, managed to get as far as Lucca station—where she found herself right in the middle of the demonstrations. People were sitting on the tracks, halting the trains, and she filmed some of the scenes.
Another friend of ours was also there. He joined the march but said he hadn’t taken part in the sit-down at the station, since it wasn’t part of the authorised route. Eventually the protesters dispersed, and our Australian traveller finally reached Bagni—later than expected, yes, but just in time to share a delicious pizza at Bidiba.
What struck her most was how calm and peaceful the protest was. Police were barely visible, a real contrast to Australia, where riot squads would almost certainly have been called in. Good for Italy—and good for us—that M eventually made it.
May the world wake up to how strong and widespread public feeling is regarding these crimes against humanity, which scar far too much of our broken world. And may peaceful solutions come sooner rather than later.

Ieri, le proteste contro gli orrori di Gaza si sono diffuse in tutta Italia, gettando nel caos i trasporti pubblici. La nostra cara amica ed ex collega australiana è atterrata a Pisa nel pomeriggio e, nonostante i disagi, è riuscita ad arrivare fino alla stazione di Lucca, dove si è ritrovata proprio nel mezzo delle manifestazioni. La gente era seduta sui binari, fermando i treni, e lei ha filmato alcune scene.
Anche un altro nostro amico era lì. Si è unito al corteo, ma ha detto di non aver preso parte all’occupazione in stazione, poiché non faceva parte del percorso autorizzato. Alla fine i manifestanti si sono dispersi e la nostra viaggiatrice australiana ha finalmente raggiunto Bagni, più tardi del previsto, sì, ma giusto in tempo per condividere una deliziosa pizza da Bidiba.
Ciò che l’ha colpita di più è stata la calma e la pace della protesta. La polizia era appena visibile, in netto contrasto con l’Australia, dove quasi certamente sarebbero state chiamate le squadre antisommossa. Un bene per l’Italia, e un bene per noi, che M alla fine ce l’abbia fatta.
Che il mondo si svegli e si renda conto di quanto sia forte e diffuso il sentimento pubblico nei confronti di questi crimini contro l’umanità, che segnano fin troppo il nostro mondo distrutto. E che soluzioni pacifiche arrivino prima possibile.
