The traditional Bagni di Lucca Christmas concert, held in the former Anglican Church, was an unqualified success.

Here is the announcement poster of the concert with the cast of presenters and singers:

Image00002

This was the programme:

img105

All the singers were good but I have to single out Nicola Simone Mugnaini for special praise. We know him from the time we were guests with Andrea Colombini and the Lucca Symphony orchestra on one of the most memorable musical occasions in our lives – the journey to Vienna to perform at the golden Musikverein, which I write about in my post at:

https://longoio2.wordpress.com/2014/12/22/lucca-conquers-vienna-with-music/

Anyway, for those unlucky enough to have been unable to attend the Bagni di Lucca concert here are some excerpts from that evening:

The first half contained the more serious stuff.

(Bianca Barsanti sings ‘Il sogno di Doretta’ from Puccini’s ‘La Rondine’)

(Nicola Simone Mugnaini sings ‘Vesti la Giubba’ from Leoncavallo’s ‘I Pagliacci’)

(Bianca Barsanti with the Queen of the Night’s aria from Mozart’s ‘Magic Flute’)

The second half contained some very lively operetta items.

Pacelli and Bocci sing Carlo Lombardo’s ‘Spesso a cuori e Picche’ from his operetta ‘Madama di Tebe’)

(Bianca Barsanti sings mechanical doll Olimpia’s aria from Offenbach’s ‘Tales of Hoffman)

(Mugnaini sings Leoncavallo’s celebrated ‘Mattinata’)

(Mugnaini with the romanza from Lehar’s ‘The land of smiles)

(Barsanti and Mugnaini sing ‘Tace il labbro’ from Lehar’s ‘Merry Widow)

(Pacelli and Bocci sing a duet from ‘Cin Ci La’)

‘Cin Ci La’ was composed by Carlo Lombardi with libretto by Virgilio Ranzato, first performed in Milan in December 1925 scoring a great success which it has retained  (with Italian audiences) ever since.

Carols followed:

The brilliant Menicagli piano added to the evening with its special sonorities.

Four hundred Euros were collected for the restoration of the historic protestant cemetery of Bagni di Lucca. (See one of my posts on this cemetery at

John Gibson and the Protestant Cemetery

The evening concluded with the characteristic Christmas Brindisi with a glass of prosecco and a piece of panettone.

The festive season has truly begun and as we returned home we found the lights of Bagni di Lucca Villa had finally been installed and switched on.

Image00017

As ever, we have to thank the indefatigable Marcello Cherubini, founder and president of the Fondazione De Montaigne for enabling Bagni di Lucca to enjoy another of its truly high quality evenings of great entertainment.

The Joyful Angels Sing Among the Mountains

I’m dedicating an additional post specially to the ‘Joyful Angels’ gospel choir concert at Montefegatesi. I mentioned them in my post on the delightful Christmas crib itinerary that, last Sunday, the Montefegatesians put on for the delectation of visitors to their very distinctive village. To read that post just click on https://longoio3.com/2018/12/10/christnas-cribs-here-there-and-everywhere/

The beautifully refurbished Montefegatesi village hall, restored to its original function as a theatre complete with proscenium arch, was inaugurated by the’ Joyful Angels’.

The choir’s director, Andrea Salvoni, a hugely talented and multi-faceted person and a great friend to have, apologised for the fact that the choir was at half strength. He need not have worried; in fact, the acoustics of the charming little theatre were absolutely suited to the reduced size of the choir present.

I took the opportunity to record a few extracts from their performance. I think you will agree they are a very special choir indeed and are lucky to have Andrea as their conductor.

The Joyful Angels choir facebook page is at

If you love Gospel music and singing why not join them?

https://wordpress.com/post/longoio3.wordpress.com/674

Ho solo fatto riferimento a qualche chiesa.

Il vento soffia;

le canne musicano

l’arcobaleno.

Learn About Giacinto Scelsi

PIANO RECITAL OF MUSIC BY GIACINTO SCELSI

On Saturday, November 10th at 7.30 PM, in the Tenuta Dello Scompiglio at Vorno (Lucca), Fabrizio Ottaviucci performs an “8-8-88 la porta dell’infinito” (“the door of the infinite”) piano recital of music by Giacinto Scelsi, on the thirtieth anniversary of the composer’s death. The program includes Suite IX, Ttai (1953) and Suite X, Ka (1954) both composed in the central period of Scelsi’s life and inspired by metaphysical concepts.

220px-giacinto_scelsi-1760461096.jpg

(Giacinto Scelsi, 1905 – 1988)

The first piece (“Pace”) relates to the movement of time. The second (“Essenza”) is based on variations on the answers to this question.

The recital is part of the “Della morte e del morire” (“Of death and dying”) theme presented by the Associazione Culturale Dello Scompiglio, with director and artist Cecilia Bertoni, in the performance space of the Tenuta di Vorno (Lucca).

From September 2018 to December 2019, there’s a packed programme of exhibitions, performances, concerts, workshops, residencies, scientific meetings and discussions and activities for children, focusing on an individual’s relationship with death.

The event includes winners of an international competition for artists in every artistic aspect. This involves over five hundred projects – alongside the creations and productions of the Compagnia Dello Scompiglio, meetings, exhibitions and guest shows.

If you are unfamiliar with Scelsi’s music then I am not surprised. So was I. His true worth has only recently been rediscovered and bears several similarities with that of the amazing English composer John Foulds (1860-1939). Among these are:

  1. An interest in oriental music. Scelsi’s favourite singer was the Japanese artiste Michiko Hirayama.
  2. The use of microtonal compositional tecniques.
  3. An awareness of the second, serialist, Viennese school.
  4. A life passed in scandalous neglect of his genius.

It is always an exciting moment when, just as you think you are pretty aware of western classical music, a name crops up that makes you reconsider its sonoral galaxy. Scelsi, for me, has changed the face of twentieth century Italian music just as much as John Foulds has altered my perception of English music.

Another Seagull Lands in Bagni di Lucca

It’s eight years since the highly talented young actor Stefano Girolami died at the age of just 28.

Every year on the last Friday of September Stefano’s friends and members of the theatre group with which he worked in Bologna come together to present a show in his memory and to raise funds for medical research at Bagni di Lucca’s Teatro Accademico.

img072

The ‘Volo Della Farfalla’ programme had this letter printed on it which I have translated thus:

Dear audience,

Thank you for attending the premiere of ‘Another Seagull’, an adaptation written by Stefano Girolami’s friends from Bologna. I remember, as if it were yesterday, the opening night of my play in Moscow in 1896. It was a real disaster! Over the following years, the play has been performed countless times throughout the world, and is now considered a classic. Does this mean that failures count for something? My characters are great experts in failure: Pètr Sorin’s estate collapses, Masa tries to forget her unrequited love; Konstantin Treplèv battles against the cultural system of which he is a part; Nina Zarecnaja pursues the impossible, Boris Trigorin follows his lost youth; Irina Arkadina embodies a refusal to accept failure, Med exemplifies its passive acceptance. 120 years later, the seagull flies from Moscow to Bologna and lands on the desks of children who read it, re-read it, rewrite it … And they fall in love with it.

It was nice to see them all concentrated around the table, immersed in the script’s first readings and then seeing them discuss it in the rehearsal room … and continue to reflect on the choices to be made ininterpreting my work. And their humorous attempts to question me and make my play more up-to-date were also brilliant. Will they have succeeded? Or will they have failed too?

I still see them there, now that they are about to go on stage. And I see myself, many years ago; still in the throes of that creative crisis that is the theatre. Enjoy.

Affectionately,

Anton Chekhov.
